The Correct Filament Calibration Order

Why calibration order matters: temperature affects max flow, max flow affects pressure advance, and pressure advance affects flow rate decisions.

Why order matters

Calibration settings are connected. Changing one setting can invalidate the next one. If you tune in the wrong order, you often end up compensating one error with another error.

1. Dry filament first

Wet filament can cause stringing, bubbles, weak layers and inconsistent extrusion. If the material is wet, every calibration result becomes questionable.

2. Extruder Steps / Rotation Distance

Before tuning material behavior, the printer must know how much filament the extruder actually moves. This is a mechanical baseline, not a filament profile setting.

3. PID Tuning

Stable temperature comes before temperature tests. If the hotend oscillates, a temperature tower becomes noisy and hard to interpret.

4. Temperature Tower

Temperature changes viscosity, layer bonding, surface finish and stringing. Choose a usable temperature before testing high-flow behavior or pressure compensation.

5. Max Volumetric Flow

Max flow tells you how much material the hotend can melt reliably. This defines the safe speed range for the filament and hotend combination.

6. Pressure Advance

Pressure Advance should be calibrated inside the safe flow range. If you exceed the hotend’s melt capacity, under-extrusion can look like a PA problem.

7. Flow Rate / Extrusion Multiplier

Flow Rate should come after PA because pressure errors can make walls and corners look over- or under-extruded. Calibrate flow once motion pressure behavior is under control.

8. Retraction

Retraction is tuned near the end because temperature, wet filament and PA can all affect stringing. Do not use retraction to hide earlier calibration errors.

9. Skew and Shrinkage

Skew is about squareness. Shrinkage is about material dimensional change. They are not the same and should be diagnosed separately.
