Why Good Prints Can Be Misleading
The Bambu problem
In 2018, stringing, warping, layer shift, and extrusion issues were everywhere. You had to fight for every print.
In 2026, a Bambu with a good PLA spool can produce — out of the box, with default settings:
Without you understanding a single thing about what's happening inside the machine.
This sounds like progress. And in many ways it is.
But it created a new problem.
The five levels of print quality
Print quality is not a single thing. It exists at five distinct levels:
Level 1 — "The print looks good."
Surface quality is acceptable. No obvious defects. You're happy with it.
Level 2 — "The print is accurate."
Dimensions are within tolerance. Parts fit together. Holes are the right size.
Level 3 — "The print is repeatable."
You get the same result every time. Same printer, same material, same profile — same output.
Level 4 — "You know why it came out well."
You can explain every parameter you used and what it does. You made intentional choices, not lucky ones.
Level 5 — "You can reproduce it on any printer."
You can transfer your knowledge to a different machine, a different material — and get the same result.
Most makers who own a Bambu today are at Level 1. Almost nobody reaches Level 4 or 5 without deliberate study.
The machine is hiding the gap.
Why success doesn't mean understanding
With a well-tuned printer and a standard material, the machine compensates for your gaps. Auto bed leveling hides inconsistent bed prep. Pre-configured Pressure Advance hides your lack of understanding of nozzle pressure. Good PLA at 220°C on a textured PEI bed at 65°C is so forgiving that almost any profile will work.
You press Print. It looks good. You assume you understood what happened.
You don't know what you don't know.

Why most people stay stuck
Pattern 1: Copying profiles
It works until it doesn't. When it doesn't, you have no idea which of 200 settings is wrong.
Pattern 2: Copying individual settings
"What's your retraction distance?" The problem: every setting depends on every other setting. A value correct for someone's setup is meaningless for yours.
Pattern 3: Changing parts randomly
"Still looks bad. Maybe I need a better hotend." Every upgrade costs money and changes multiple variables simultaneously. You still don't know what was wrong.
Pattern 4: Watching 50 contradictory tutorials
Without a framework, you can't evaluate which advice applies to your situation.
Pattern 5: Getting 10 different answers online
All from well-meaning people who solved the same symptom for completely different root causes.
The CN3D approach
We don't teach settings. We teach understanding.
If we teach you the correct retraction value, you have one answer.
If we teach you what retraction actually does physically, you can derive the correct value for any printer, any material, any hotend.
This takes slightly longer to learn. It produces results that last forever.
